Stephen Pinny toasts to a prosperous New Year

We speak to our Durham branch manager Stephen Pinny.

“Having opened the Durham branch in August 2017 I’m quickly building a great team around me and a solid portfolio of clients. Located in Durhamgate Enterprise City Industrial Estate, the branch is our fifth in the region alongside Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Gateshead and Newcastle.

I started my career at Newey & Eyre, Durham in 1997. I know the sector well having worked as an assistant branch manager in our Sunderland branch for nearly eight years and as branch manager at an independent wholesaler, Stephenson Cook, prior to this. With a strong desire to progress my career, the opportunity to develop a new branch in Durham was too good a challenge to miss!

I live in Brandon, Durham, so the move was a natural fit for me. I have an experienced team of five people working with me. They include, assistant manager, Jake Mooney, warehouse manager Tom Burns, internal sales, David Hogg and our external account manager Mark Barrigan. I’ve also recently appointed a new driver, Greg Cowell and will shortly be announcing a new starter within our warehouse and trade counter area.

The key element to the success of the branch is the team. It is important they all understand each other’s role. We have an open plan office where updates on activity take place on an hourly basis. Everyone is very hands-on and we all help each other, which is a reflection of the culture throughout the company. We had 40 live accounts when I moved across to Durham, this has grown to 65. They range from electrical contractors to local housing associations and industrial manufacturing companies.

How have we grown the accounts so quickly?

The simple answer is ‘persistence’. Mark and I have actively developed leads, we have networked consistently and have cold called many new prospects. My aim is to have 100 clients by the first quarter of 2018. By creating a highly motivated team we are experiencing good growth and the support from our specialist services division based on Gateshead adds huge value to existing and new clients. We’re the only electrical distributor in the region that offers a comprehensive lighting and building automation design service, it’s truly unique.

Turnover is currently exceeding £225,000 per month and by the end of 2018 I would like this in excess of £300,000 or £3.6 million per year. I can’t do this alone, we work together as a close branch team and we have achieved success in our early months because of this and despite difficult market conditions. At all times, we offer a high quality service at a cost effective rates as we look at new ways of remaining ahead of the competition.
