Establishing a loyal customer base is the key to success

When he is not rocking out to his favourite band, Biffy Clyro or taking part in a 10-mile mud and obstacle ‘tough mudder’ challenge, one which emphasises teamwork and camaraderie…Glen Jaworski is leading the way in business development at our Teesside branch.

I have been in the wholesale industry for over 20 years and worked at Park for two years in 2000/2002 before returning in 2015. I had been working for a national company in Newcastle but as a Teessider born and bred, when I heard about the opening of Park’s Teesside branch, I jumped at the opportunity.

I was approached by branch manager, Tony Arena and sales director, Craig Hopwood and was appointed business development manager. I had the opportunity to build a fresh customer base on Teesside within a very competitive market. The flexibility of working for an independent company and with a management team that is fleet-of-foot and capable of making important decisions very quickly, has been a real bonus. Since the branch opening, our sales have grown year-on-year. We have an aggressive five-year business plan and at just over half way point of year three, we are well on the way to achieving our goals.

We have done this by working as a close unit under the supervision of branch manager, Tony Arena and sales director, Craig Hopwood. Craig is someone who I admire and his management style with the sales team is something I would like to emulate in the future.  I would also like to mentor younger people coming into the team who could benefit from my knowledge of the sector.

Growing my existing customer base by offering a high-quality service at a competitive price remains crucial. The number one rule is that the customer always comes first! The lighting design division at Park has strengthened our overall offering, as I am able to cross-sell our services. The biggest change in the sector has been the development of LED lighting – new technology has been crucial to our growth and the way in which we operate.

New technology presents opportunities and challenges as we strive to be at the forefront of sector activity. As we continue to advance, the Teesside branch is building a strong team and developing the next generation of talented workers. I am looking forward to providing support and guidance to apprentices progressing into a sales environment.
