Chance of a lifetime for our new trainee lighting engineer

We speak to trainee lighting engineer, Jasmine Benson

“I joined Park Electrical Distributors in November and work with lighting design manager, Karl Snowdon. It was actually through Karl that I was appointed! I worked at B&Q for four years designing customer bathroom and kitchens….One of which was for Karl and his family.

I was tasked with designing Karl’s kitchen and he must have been impressed with my designs and working relationship with him, as he asked me to interview for a position within his team. This was an opportunity that I could not turn down and I grasped it with both hands. There are five of us in the lighting design team at Park’s Gateshead branch, where I am based, and the guys have been brilliant, helping me to adapt to the new role.

It is fantastic to learn on-the-job skills and to have a great mentoring structure in place. I am looking forward to starting a lighting industry academy scheme in April, which will further develop my knowledge and I have already been fortunate to be involved with the design of a number of exciting projects, including offices and churches. Outside of work I play the piano and teach guitar every Saturday. I also play football for Consett on Sundays, so my weekends are a mixture of music and sport. I may even offer guitar lessons to some of the team if they are up to a new challenge!”
